Peace & Love Rocks

The Story Behind
Peace & Love Rocks

We founded Spread Peace and Love in December of 2012 with the idea that we wanted to help people to feel loved and cared for and to encourage others to do the same. In January of 2013, we decided it would be fun to paint rocks and leave them randomly for people to find. Our hope was that finding these unexpected tokens of love and kindness would brighten people's days.

Our first rocks were purchased along with our paints and brushes at a local craft store. I brought the paints, rocks and brushes to an elder care home during a visit with my mother. As I painted and chatted with my mother, many of the men and women who lived there came by to ask what we were doing, then stayed for a bit to share about their lives. When they were ready to leave, I asked them to select whichever rock they liked best as a reminder that they were special and loved. As I witnessed the delight on their faces as they left with their freshly painted rock, I realized there would be many more "Peace" and" Love" rocks to follow.

My teenage daughter (and co-founder of Spread Peace and Love) became my painting buddy and the labor of love became doubly rewarding. We soon decided we preferred the randomness of size, shape and color, as well as the natural quality of found rocks. The entire family joins us on rock hunting days... while we are picky about which rocks we select, we don't worry about how many we collect. Running out of rocks to paint just means another family day focusing on doing for others!

In the summer of 2013, we started pulling together selections of 5-6 rocks to gift to friends and acquaintances struggling with a physical or emotional challenge in their lives. Our goal is for our rocks to help remind them to focus on the positive, that they are loved, and that they are not alone in their journey.

We have painted thousands of rocks (so many, we have actually lost count!) with our message of love, kindness and peace. To this day, we continue to paint and leave Spread Peace and Love Rocks for others to find. We have traveled across the US and even to the UK spreading our message. Our goal is to reach even further... but we need help.

This is where you can join in! Send us a self addressed stamped envelope and we will send you 10 of our Random Act of Kindness Cards (above). If you like getting artsy.... you can paint your own rocks to leave randomly with a kindness card for others to find. Not feeling creative? No problem! The Spread Peace and Love Kindness Cards were created to accompany any act of kindness. Need some suggestions?

  1. Randomly leave someone a gift card for a cup of coffee.
  2. Mail someone an anonymous note telling them how wonderful they are.
  3. Leave change by a vending machine.
  4. Tape a bag of microwave popcorn to your local Redbox.
  5. Pick wildflowers and leave them on a neighbor's doorstep.
  6. Bake some goodies for your local fire or police department.

... You get the idea!!
