Love Will Save the World!
With summer in full swing and temperatures hovering around uncomfortable, my hubby and kids decided our family outing for the weekend would be to find refuge in the nearest air-conditioned theater and take in a movie. Their movie of choice – Wonder Woman.
I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I had read some positive reviews, so I was cautiously optimistic. To say I loved this movie would be an understatement. From the opening scene with young Diana defiantly escaping her caretaker and flying down railings to get a glimpse of the Amazon Warriors training for battle; to Diana as a young adult during World War I attempting to save everyone the war brought in harm’s way; to Diana’s final conflict with and destruction of Ares the God of War… this movie had my attention.
While I found the movie entertaining from start to finish, the scene that resonated the strongest occurred near the end of the film. Mid-battle, Ares appeals to Diana to view the human race as he sees them – selfish, destructive, and unworthy of being saved. Ares implores Diana, “They don’t deserve our help, they only deserve destruction.” Diana’s answer was both pivotal in her character development and defining of her moral fiber. “They’re everything you say but so much more,” confesses Diana. “It’s not about what you deserve, it’s what you believe.” She continues, “And I believe in them (people).” Diana concludes, “Only love can truly save the world.”
Despite everything Diana has seen and all she has experienced in the world of man, she still believes in love. She believes in goodness, in heroism, and the power of love to change people’s hearts and to heal the world. “Awesome message,” you may be thinking, “but a bit Pollyanna and hardly credible coming from a comic book character.” Alright, I get the comic book character part, but Pollyanna… not at all. Great leaders over the past century have shared these ideals time and time again. If you need a few more sources outside of Wonder Woman to substantiate the power of love, the goodness in humanity, and the ability of one person to make a difference–read on…
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Love is the only light which can illuminate a world grown dim.” ~ Pope Francis
“It's always inspiring to me to meet people who feel that they can make a difference in the world. That's their motive, that's their passion... I think that's what makes your life meaningful, that's what fills your own heart and that's what gives you purpose.” ~ Maria Shriver
“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” ~ Nelson Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom
"One person can make a difference, and everyone should try." ~ John F. Kennedy.
“If something is worth doing, do it. If, in fact, you fail, there’ll be no cause for regret. You can try again. To die without even having tried, will be to die disappointed. We all have opportunities to contribute making a better world; we must seize them with far-sighted vision. I’m encouraged that so many people are becoming interested in the well-being of humanity. This is surely a sign of hope.” ~ Dalai Lama
“What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” ~ Jane Goodall
“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events. It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.” ~ Robert F. Kennedy
“I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.” ~ Edward Everett Hale
“The ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.” ~ Steve Jobs
“We can change the world one thought at a time, one child at a time, one family at a time, one community at a time, one city, one state and one country at a time.” ~ Bryant McGill
“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember you have within you the strength, the patience and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” ~ Harriet Tubman
“What we do now echoes in eternity.” ~ Marcus Aurelius
“Small things done with great love will change the world.” ~ Mother Teresa
